Ecotron Hasselt University entails 12 enclosed sun-lit macrocosms where lysimeters (3.14m2; 1.5m depth) containing ecosystem samples are installed on intact soil monoliths, and climate scenarios of high detail can be imposed. Tracing of CO2 pathways is enabled through isotopic labelling. Sampling every 30 min: air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, net ecosystem exchange, greenhouse gases (CO2 , CH4 and N2O), energy influx in the ecosystem (PPFD and PAR), evapotranspiration; soil temperature, electrical conductivity, water content, water tension, vegetation dynamics; Sampling every 3 weeks: C, N, P content and micronutrients at 5 depths, in triplicates; Sampling every 3 months: soil microbial communities.
