About Service

The Banyuls Bacterial Culture Collection (BBCC), formerly MOLA, was established in 2001. Currently, 3266 environmental bacterial strains are maintained in our collection, with new ones being added regularly. It is located at the Banyuls Observatory (France) which is run by Sorbonne University and the CNRS. The BBCC is part of the European infrastructure EMBRC and the French national infrastructure EMBRC-France.

Specific informations

Pr. Phillipe Lebaron established the collection in 2001. The BBCC is part of the  Laboratory of Microbial Biodiversity and Biotechnology (LBBM), USR3579 of the Banyuls Observatory, located on a rocky coast and close to the Spanish border, France. It is jointly operated by Sorbonne Université (SU) and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) .

The strains of the BBCC were isolated from samples taken during oceanographic cruises all over the globe: from oligotrophic waters to the most eutrophic, at the water interface with air or sediments, or from the water column. Many strains were also isolated from animals (sponges, sea urchin, catshark..) and plants (Posidonia).

Due to the great variety of samples and to the use of innovative isolation methods, the BBCC collection contains a wide diversity of bacterial strains.

The BBCC is part of the EMBRC (European Marine Biology Resources Center) infrastructure. The collection is registered at the World Data Centre for Microorganisms (WDCM) under reference WDC911. All strains have a unique code number (BBCCxxxx). Please use this number when referring to any strain from the collection.
